Ness Labs: The Myth of Multitasking 🪩

Edition #166 – Nov 10th, 2022

Single Tasking

Hello friends,

Did you know that the term "multitasking" was originally coined at IBM to refer to computers? Yet, somehow, humans pride themselves in being efficient multitaskers.

We'll reply to a quick email while working on a presentation, chat on the phone while skimming a document, and review an upcoming product launch while listening to a podcast.

The thing is: for humans, multitasking is an illusion. What we're doing should be called multi-switching, and it has a terrible impact on our productivity, our creativity, and our ability to learn.

This week, Dr Hannah England looked into the science of multitasking and how you can make the most of single-tasking. On my side, I have published what I think is one of the thoroughest reviews of the current landscape of AI tools for creative and knowledge work.

If, like me, you spend most of your working time in front of a computer, I hope this week's newsletter helps you examine your relationship with digital work in a new light.

Thank you for reading,
Anne-Laure.

P.S. We had a fantastic start to the Mindful Productivity Masterclass. If you missed the first session, it's not too late to watch the recording and to join us for the second session on Monday next week.

February 27th, 2025A newsletter by Anne-Laure Le Cunff READ ON THE WEB Hello friends, Earlier this week, I was on a meeting with my publisher when I received the finished copies of Tiny Experiments. I thought it’d be fun to open the package while on the call… and I ended up crying in front of the entire team. There’s truly something special about holding in your hands the fruit of several years of work. The doubts, the questions, the research, the writing and rewriting… All of a sudden, this...

February 21st, 2025A newsletter by Anne-Laure Le Cunff READ ON THE WEB Hello friends, Two weeks left until the book launch! Tickets are sold out for NYC and London, with a few still available for Austin. I’m on my way to Boston where I’ve been invited to record a podcast. This morning, as I was journaling before heading to the airport, an amazing realization hit me: whatever the outcome of the launch, I’m incredibly lucky to share these ideas with the world. I had to learn how to read and...

Sometimes, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where fear is coming from, but in this case, I know exactly what’s going on: just three weeks to go until the launch of Tiny Experiments, my biggest...
